BREE WASN’T WORRIED about John seeing her. She knew where he was and what he wanted. John wanted her because he wanted revenge for his brother’s death.

He wanted Bree to pay.

And maybe I should.

Bree had the matching purse and gun that Beth had given her on their first anniversary at the gun range, holding it in her hand as she walked with what could be best described as a sense of purpose through downtown St. Isidore.

It is time for this to come to an end, Bree thought to herself.

I can’t live like this anymore.

I don’t want to die, I just don’t want to live

This is it.

This is a good day to die?

This is good enough.

There is no motivator like guilt. Young mothers learn early what their mothers had been taught by their mothers. The best bosses know it, and those who are consumed by guilt figure it out just like Bree.

She’d had her fill of guilt and the noxious, gnawing, nagging worry that comes along with it.

Bree was tired of her heart stopping every time she heard a police siren.

Bree was tired of walking down the street and seeing men who looked like her stepfather, Steven, or Tim her old high school teacher and lover, or Tim’s best friend and lover, Paul, and the women who all looked like her dead mother.

Bree was responsible for all of their deaths.

Bree was trapped in a horror movie where the faces of people on the street shifted their shapes into the ghosts that owned her soul.

I can’t take this any more. There has to be a way out. There is a way out. I can see the exit sign from here. It is glowing the brightest red I have ever seen.

It may not have been the door of opportunity that most people were looking for, but for Bree, but it worked.

The exit door was just what she needed.

She knew it.

She was sure of it.

What she didn’t know was what was on the other side.

Who does?

Bree was going to find out. But first she had to stop John. When she was gone there would be no one to protect Beth.

I don’t want anyone else coming with me. This I have to do on my own.

But I need money. That means I need Melinda.

I can die when I am done.
